A bursa is a fluid filled sac near a joint that helps cushion the muscles, tendons and bones in the joint complex.  In some cases, these bursae may become inflamed with a condition called Bursitis.  The most common areas for bursitis to present itself include, but are not limited to the shoulder, hip and elbow joints.

Bursitis is most commonly a result of overuse of the joint effected.  It is common in athletes such as runners, cyclists, swimmers, weightlifters and baseball/softball pitchers.  It can also present in those with jobs causing them to lean on their elbows for significant periods of time (desk jobs) or hobbies that cause them to lean on their knees (gardening).  Bursitis is more common with age.  Pre-existing conditions such as gout, rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis will increase the likelihood of experiencing bursitis.

Symptoms include:

·      Redness and swelling of the joints effected

·      Stiff, achy and painful joints

·      Pain worsening with motion or pressure on the joint

Active Performance Chiropractic's doctors use movement based analysis to diagnose a case of bursitis.  Treatment for bursitis may include Active Release Techniques manual therapy to improve the health and quality of the muscles, tendons and ligaments involved, rehabilitative exercises to strengthen and stabilize the joints and mobilization/manipulation of the effected joint complex.  Each treatment is tailored to an individual’s unique presentation, load variables and goals following treatment.

Active Performance Chiropractic focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries. Treatment is a unique blend of Active Release Techniques®, traditional chiropractic therapy, and physical rehabilitation designed to match each patient’s goals and lifestyle.
