Bursitis
A bursa is a fluid filled sac near a joint that helps cushion the muscles, tendons and bones in the joint complex. In some cases, these bursae may become inflamed with a condition called Bursitis. The most common areas for bursitis to present itself include, but are not limited to the shoulder, hip and elbow joints.
Bursitis is most commonly a result of overuse of the joint effected. It is common in athletes such as runners, cyclists, swimmers, weightlifters and baseball/softball pitchers. It can also present in those with jobs causing them to lean on their elbows for significant periods of time (desk jobs) or hobbies that cause them to lean on their knees (gardening). Bursitis is more common with age. Pre-existing conditions such as gout, rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis will increase the likelihood of experiencing bursitis.
Symptoms include: · Redness and swelling of the joints effected · Stiff, achy and painful joints · Pain worsening with motion or pressure on the joint
