Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease (DJD) is a chronic condition that denotes joint irritation and inflammation.  It is the most common form of arthritis affecting 27 million Americans.  The cause of osteoarthritis is a gradual process that involves repeatedly loading a joint improperly.  Over time the joint cartilage and bony surface will become inflamed and breakdown.  The dysfunctions that can lead to DJD:

Scar tissue accumulation in soft tissue structures:
  • Decreased “flexibility”
    • Lack of joint stability
  • Weakness/Instability
    • Lack of proper joint movement
  • Decreased “mobility”

Joints most commonly affected include:
  • Hips
  • Hands
  • Knees
  • Shoulders
  • Low back
  • Neck
  • Symptoms include:
  • Joint stiffness/tightness
  • Joint pain
  • Decreased ranges of motion
  • Joint “grating” or “popping” sensations

The conservative treatment of osteoarthritis includes:
  • Active Release Techniques to restore proper soft tissue function
  • Joint mobilization/manipulation to address restricted joint movement
  • Strengthening and stabilization exercises to address joint instability and prevent the condition from reoccurring

At home management can include:
  • Proper warm up before activity
  • Incorporate stability, mobility, and flexibility exercises into daily routine
  • Maintain soft tissue heath with foam rolling or regular deep tissue massage
  • Fish oil supplementation: 1-3g EPA/DHA daily to counter inflammatory response and improve joint healing
  • Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplementation: 1.5g/750mg daily (respectively) to promote cartilage healing
