Rotator Cuff Syndrome
Rotator Cuff Syndrome (RCS) refers to an injury to one or more of the muscles that stabilize the shoulder. The “shoulder” is a complex of four joints and four muscles:
- Scapulothoracic
- Glenohumeral
- Acromiocalvicular
- Sternoclavicular
Four muscles primarily stabilize the shoulder:
- Supraspinatus
- Infraspinatus
- Teres minor
- Subscapularis
Causes of RCS include:
- Acute Injury:
- Sports injury
- Fall on out-stretched hand (FOOSH)
- Chronic Conditions:
- Repetitive movements:
- Weightlifting
- Swimming
- Golfing
- Throwing sports
- Work demands
Physical examination should include:- Mobility of the joints of the shoulder complex
- Strength/stability of the muscles of the rotator cuff
- Dysfunctional movement patterns of the upper extremity
Treatment should address: - Soft-tissue health
- Mobility of the joints of the shoulder complex
- Strength & stability of the rotator cuff musculature
